Singer-songwriter Martin Zellar takes pride in sustaining a 35-year career through songwriting, recording, and performing. While not always easy or glamorous, he’s found a way, driven by both passion and necessity. His success stems from consistently delivering quality songwriting and heartfelt performances.
Zellar emerged in the mid-’80s Minneapolis music scene as the frontman of the alt-country pioneering Gear Daddies. After signing with Gark Records in 1986, they released a 45rpm and the LP Let’s Go Scare Al. In 1988, they joined Polygram Records, though the label struggled to market them in a pre-Americana era.
The Gear Daddies gained acclaim with Billy’s Live Bait (1990), toured extensively, and performed on Late Night with David Letterman before amicably splitting in 1992. Zellar then launched a solo career, releasing seven albums, including the well-received Born Under (1993) and Roosters Crow (2012).
In October 2023, he returned with Head West, his first new album in over a decade, earning widespread critical praise.
