The New Standards is a genre-blending trio from the Twin Cities with a devoted global following. Formed in 2005 as a side project among longtime Minneapolis musicians and friends, the group has grown into a celebrated act, known for reimagining pop and rock songs through a jazz-inspired lens.
Their unique acoustic sound has taken them around the world, filling clubs and theaters, and inspiring a wide range of creative work—including albums, videos, theater, dance collaborations, and even cartoons.
The trio features pianist Chan Poling (The Suburbs), bassist John Munson (Trip Shakespeare, Semisonic), and vibraphonist Steve Roehm (Billygoat, Electropolis), each bringing their diverse musical backgrounds to the mix. Originally drawn together by a desire to expand the jazz trio repertoire beyond traditional standards, they began performing stripped-down, emotionally rich versions of songs from across decades, especially post-1960s pop. With inventive arrangements and space for improvisation, The New Standards offer a fresh, soulful take on beloved tunes, bridging the gap between jazz and pop with style and heart.
